Florida has more golf courses than any other state, and a striking number of them will not let you walk. Between the heat, the humidity, and course routings that thread through housing developments with long transitions between holes, the cart is close to mandatory in much of the state.
That is a real loss if walking is how you like to play. It is cheaper, it is better exercise, and for a lot of golfers it is simply a better round.
So we filtered our Florida directory for public, 18-hole courses that permit walking, play under about 6,300 yards, and post green fees an everyday golfer can justify. Seven came through. These are not the famous Florida courses. You will not find Sawgrass or Streamsong here. They are the ones you can actually get on, on foot, without booking months ahead.
How we picked: These selections come from our course directory records: walking policy, yardage, slope rating, and posted green fees. They are not based on subjective play impressions. We have not played all seven. Everything stated below is drawn from the directory data, and every course links through to its full record. 1. Boca Raton Municipal Golf Course
Location: Boca Raton, FL Holes: 18 · Par: 72 · Length: 6,115 yards · Slope: 119
The best-equipped course on this list. Boca Raton Municipal is the only one of the seven with a full facility set in our records: driving range, pro shop, lessons, power carts, and equipment sales. That matters if you want to warm up properly or you are walking as a matter of preference rather than budget.
At par 72 over 6,115 yards with a slope of 119, it plays close to the honest middle of public golf. The course rating of 68.5 sits below par, which points to a track that gives up shots to a competent player rather than defending itself with length. Bermuda fairways and greens throughout, with water in play and between 11 and 20 bunkers, the lightest bunkering of any course here.
Opened in 1960, and walking is permitted.
Who should skip it: Anyone chasing a resort experience. This is a municipal course and it reads like one.

2. River Run Golf Links
Location: Bradenton, FL Holes: 18 · Par: 70 · Length: 5,809 yards · Slope: 128
The most interesting number on this list is River Run’s slope of 128 against just 5,809 yards. Slope measures how much harder a course plays for a bogey golfer than for a scratch player, and 113 is the national average. A 128 slope on a sub-5,900-yard par 70 means the difficulty is not coming from length. It is coming from the trouble.
Water is in play and there are between 31 and 40 bunkers packed into a short routing. Bermuda throughout, opened in 1987.
It also posts the lowest green fees in our Florida records among courses with complete data. If you want a walkable round that still asks questions, this is the one to look at first.
Who should skip it: Golfers who lose balls in water. The combination of short yardage and high slope usually means forced carries.

3. Manatee County Golf Course

The most conventional par 72 on the list, and probably the best all-round choice for a regular walking round. At 6,195 yards with a slope of 121 and a course rating of 69.8, the numbers describe a fair, full-length municipal test.
Bermuda fairways running to tifdwarf greens, the only course here with that combination in our records. Tifdwarf is a finer-bladed putting surface that tends to run quicker than standard bermuda. Between 51 and 60 bunkers is the second-heaviest bunkering on this list, so the trouble is sand rather than length.

4. The Links at Boynton Beach

At 5,109 yards this is the shortest full-length course on the list, and the easiest walk. That makes it a genuine option for seniors, juniors, and anyone returning to golf after a layoff, a category Florida public golf serves badly.
Slope 117 and course rating 69.4 is an unusual pairing. The rating is high relative to the yardage, which suggests scoring is harder than the scorecard length implies. Between 41 and 50 bunkers on a course this short will be part of that. Water is in play, bermuda throughout, opened in 1984.
Pro shop and lessons on site, though no power carts listed in our records, which is fitting for a walking list.
Who should skip it: Long hitters. At 5,109 yards you will be hitting wedge into a lot of greens.

5. The Links at Greenfield Plantation
Location: Bradenton, FL Holes: 18 · Par: 72 · Length: 5,712 yards · Slope: 131
The hardest course on this list by a clear margin. Slope 131 and a course rating of 73.0 against 5,712 yards is a genuinely unusual combination. A rating above par on a course well under 6,000 yards means it is defending scoring by design rather than distance.
Between 21 and 30 bunkers, water in play, bermuda fairways and greens. The newest course here, opened in 1998, with a pro shop and driving range on site.
If you are a low-handicap player who wants a walking round that will not bore you, start here.
Who should skip it: High handicappers. A 131 slope will punish a wayward round regardless of the yardage.

6. Fort Myers Country Club
Location: Fort Myers, FL Holes: 18 · Par: 71 · Length: 6,066 yards · Slope: 115
The oldest course on this list by a wide margin, opened in 1928, and the most forgiving on paper. Slope 115 and a course rating of 68.8 against 6,066 yards describe a course that lets a decent player score.
The number that stands out is the bunkering: between 81 and 90 bunkers, by some distance the most on this list. On a course with a low slope, that many bunkers usually means they are shallow and positional rather than penal. Bermuda throughout, water in play, walking permitted, driving range on site.
Green fees run higher than the municipals above, which is the trade for the history.

7. Southwinds Golf Course

The outlier, and included deliberately. At 4,453 yards Southwinds is a short course rather than a full-length track, and we would not recommend it as your regular round.
What it is good for is a fast walking eighteen, a beginner’s first full round, or a practice day where you want to hit a lot of wedges and short irons under real conditions. Slope 118 says it is not a pushover despite the length, and between 31 and 40 bunkers on a course this short backs that up. Bermuda throughout, opened in 1985.
