Unlike our US articles in this series, we can’t filter by walking policy here: that field is empty for all but one course on record in the province, so instead of guessing, we’re leaning on the two numbers that are consistently reliable across Ontario courses, slope and yardage, and what their combination actually tells you about a round.
Slope measures how much harder a course plays for a bogey golfer than for a scratch player, with 113 as the national average. Read alongside yardage, it separates courses that are hard because they’re long from courses that are hard regardless of length. We picked seven that show that range clearly.
How we picked: These selections come from our course directory records: yardage, slope rating, course rating, and posted green fees. They are not based on subjective play impressions. We have not played all seven. Everything stated below is drawn from the directory data, and every course links through to its full record. 3. Copper Creek Golf Course

Why doesn't this list mention walking policy?
Our directory's walking field is empty for essentially every Ontario course on record, 600 of 601, so we can't state it reliably one way or the other. That's a gap in the data we have, not a claim that these courses are cart-only. Call ahead if walking matters to your round.
Is a higher slope rating always a harder course in Ontario?
Generally yes, but the combination with yardage matters more than either number alone. Oslerbrook, for instance, carries a 136 slope at just 5,778 yards, meaning the difficulty comes from the course's design and green complexes rather than sheer length. A long course with a lower slope, like Kings Forest at 7,042 yards and a 120 slope, may actually play easier for a mid-handicap golfer despite requiring more club off the tee.
Are Ontario's longest public courses worth playing if I'm not a long hitter?
It depends on the slope alongside the yardage. Wooden Sticks and Osprey Valley are both over 7,000 yards with slopes above 137, which will be a genuine grind from the back tees for a shorter hitter. Most Ontario courses in this length range post multiple tee options, so check the forward tees before ruling a course out on yardage alone.
If you want the toughest test the province’s public golf has to offer and don’t mind paying for it, Wooden Sticks and Copper Creek both deliver. If you want that same caliber of difficulty without the green fee, Seven Lakes at $30 is the standout value in this list.
